INDRUKWEKKENDE ACTIE VAN GOOGLE

Google USA maakt weer eens indruk.

New York City Emergency Information: Official updates about transportation, medical assistance, school evacuations, and related facilities.

New York Blood Center: New York Blood Center has announced a blood emergency for the greater New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. All eligible donors are urged to make a blood donation at donor sites in Manhattan at 310 East 67th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues) and 150 Amsterdam Avenue (66-67th Streets); in Brooklyn at 120 Lawrence Street near MetroTech; on Staten Island at 1625 Forest Avenue; on Long Island at 2500 Marcus Avenue in Lake Success, 3125 Veterans Highway in Bohemia; 333 Merrick Road in Rockville Centre and Route 110N in Melville/Huntington; at 167 New Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey; and 525 Executive Blvd. in Elmsford in Westchester. For more details on available donor locations, call 1-800-933-2566. Hours at all sites have been extended until further notice.

American Red Cross: Donate blood: the latest information on the site says: "The American Red Cross is doing everything we can to ensure the immediate availability of the safest possible blood... We are also dispatching hundreds of trained disaster workers and mental health counselors to New York, Washington D.C. and elsewhere." Donors who wish to give blood in the coming days to replenish the nation's blood supply are encouraged to call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to make an appointment. If you can't get through by phone, try searching for a local Red Cross office, by Zip code.

United Airlines Assistance Center: United has set up a help team for family and friends of passengers onboard United Flight 93 or United Flight 175. The toll-free phone number for families in the US to call is 1-800-932-8555.

American Airlines Info: For information about relatives, call American’s response number at 1-800-245-0999.

Washington Area Evacuations and Closures: The Washington Post lists information about federal buildings, schools, public transportation and other services.

Nationwide Closures: Also from the Washington Post, a list of affected services, including air travel, military facilities, and stock exchanges.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): Normally dealing with emergencies such as storms, floods and environmental disasters, FEMA has information on coping with the impacts of disaster (how to get crisis counseling, where to find a place to stay, if you have lost a loved one). The site is posting updates specific to today's terrorist attack.

Talking With Kids: Great advice on how to talk with your children to help them understand what has happened, how to cope with their feelings, fears and anxieties. With good links to news sources for kids.

Yahoo! Full Coverage - Terrorist Attack: Good links to news reports, commentaries and discussion, constantly updated and (so far) handling the traffic well.

Google - Cached News Pages: Google is providing direct links to key news sources from its front page, as well as cached copies of hard-to-access pages. Also try CNN coverage directly.

Background on World Trade Center building
http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/World_Trade_Center.html

The FBI has a state of the art, online computer database known as the Terrorist Information System containing information on suspected terrorist groups and individuals. The system has over 200,000 individuals and over 3,000 organizations or enterprises. The individuals indexed include not only subjects of investigations but also known or suspected members of terrorist groups, associates, contacts, victims and witnesses. The organizations or enterprises include not only terrorist groups but also affiliated organizations or enterprises. TIS allows the FBI to rapidly retrieve information and to make links between persons, groups or events.

The Justice Department's Terrorism in the United states index-annual summaries from 1996-1999
http://www.fbi.gov/publications/terror/terroris.htm

In May of this year, FBI director Louis Freeh testified before before the United States Senate Committees on Appropriations, Armed Services, and Select Committee on Intelligence. http://www.fbi.gov/congress/congress01/freeh051001.htm

Excerpts from Freeh's comments included: "The threat of terrorism to the United States remains a concern. Over the past five years, the level of acts committed in the United States have increased steadily. There were two known or suspected terrorist acts recorded in the United States in 1995, three in 1996, four in 1997, five in 1998, and 12 in 1999. The 12 known or suspected acts in 1999 included two separate acts committed by lone domestic extremists in California and Indiana/Illinois, eight acts attributed to animal rights and environmental extremists, one bombing incident believed carried out by separatists in Puerto Rico, and one arson incident possibly committed by animal rights extremists or anarchists in Washington State. In addition to the 12 known or suspected terrorist acts in 1999, seven planned acts of terrorism were prevented in the United States during the year."

The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) will most likely take over the coordination of all of this--as FEMA has always planned to do in the event of a national attack.
